PBS News: The Power of Exercise

It's been well known for many decades that exercise provides many benefits to our health. But a new scientific consortium is revealing new insights into just how profound exercise can be for the human body. William Brangham of PBS News discussed this intriguing topic with Euan Ashley, a professor of cardiovascular medicine and genetics at Stanford University and the newly named chair of its department of medicine. I’ve been a big fan of PBS News for decades. Sure, it’s not Canadian news, per se, but it focuses on presenting the news absent of the over-the-top production of CBC News. Often the articles are universally applicable to everyone like this refreshing and inspiring report on the unparalleled power of exercise to transform, even in small amounts, the health and strength of regular everyday people. Nothing else comes close as you’ll see in the report. Not being a scientist, I could see only anecdotally how my clients respond to work and recovery cycles. I have witnessed the accumulative effects of weeks and months of this particular cycle of cause and effect: sessions of functional strength training, followed by rest, recovery and good nutrition, yield steady results in every population I’ve worked with. It is the result of a universal law of human adaptation to physical stressors. When the right amount of good work is applied regularly and coupled with recovery, every system in the body from from musculoskeletal to endocrine benefits and adapts by becoming more resilient and robust.

I’m overjoyed at seeing this report at the beginning of this new year and hope that you become inspired by your own body’s hidden powers. As a professional personal trainer I’m here to help set you on this course to long term health and longevity. Whether you want to learn to workout at home or in any fitness centre or gym, I can provide the expertise and open your body and mind to the possibilities. Also, you will feel better than you ever have as an adult when you learn to strength train!!

To your best health,
