The primary goal of our Winter 2021 drop-in group training programs is to help all levels of runners, cyclists, endurance athletes, swimmers, and fitness enthusiasts develop sport-specific and general strength, endurance, and capacity through structured HIIT workouts outdoors and over Zoom. If all goes according to plan, you’ll emerge healthy, fit and functional, from what could be could be a long, chilly winter ahead.
Why HIIT? Like it or not, research over the years has proven that high intensity interval training, or HIIT, generates a different series of fitness responses and adaptaptions, leading to greater strength, stamina and endurance, than regular steady-state endurance workouts.
Here’s a link to a recent article in the New York Times detailing the effects of HIIT-style training.
Besides HIIT, what else can you expect from Athletic Endeavours Drop-in HIIT classes?
Runners, cyclists and swimmers can look forward to improving efficiency and fluidity of movement on the run, on the bike or in the water. Learn to sustain ideal technique in the face of fatigue. Learn to optimize your energy output in a variety of conditions and metabolic states, particularly at higher intensities, through carefully structured bouts of work coupled with recovery. All group workouts are outdoors where a maximum of 8 participants are masked and physically-distanced.
All of these drop-in group workouts inevitably challenge all energy systems, but there will be a specific focus on High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). All workouts are performed under the watchful eye of Coach Andrew Tuovinen. Each run, cycle, swim or group functional training workout begins with a gradual warm-up, followed by the main set HIIT training or functional resistance training, and concludes with a cool-down.
FYI: The drop-in swimming HIIT program is seasonal, offered in the Spring and Summer outdoors in open water at Locarno Beach and Kitsilano Beach. There are no pool options for this program.
